MTG Hobbit & Marvel: First Spoilers Revealed

MagicCon Las Vegas 2026 just delivered the biggest Universes Beyond reveals of the year. Magic: The Gathering is bringing two of the most-requested crossovers ever to the tabletop: Marvel Super Heroes in June and The Hobbit in August. Here's everything we know so far about the new sets, headliner cards, and what to expect.
MTG x Marvel Super Heroes — Releases June 26, 2026
Wizards of the Coast officially launched its long-anticipated Marvel partnership at MagicCon Vegas. Marvel Super Heroes brings iconic characters from across the Marvel Universe — from legendary heroes to world-threatening villains — reimagined through Magic's gameplay.
The Mind Stone Reveal
The first card unveiled was The Mind Stone, presented onstage by MCU star Paul Bettany (Vision himself). Here's the official card text:
- Mana cost: {1}{W} (2 CMC)
- Type: Legendary Artifact — Infinity Stone
- Indestructible
- {T}: Add {W}
- {5}{W}, {T}: Harness The Mind Stone (activates the infinity ability)
- ∞ ability: At the beginning of your end step, exile up to one other target nonland permanent you control, then return it to the battlefield
Three variants are confirmed:
- Standard frame — found in Play Boosters
- Textless full-art headliner — Collector Booster exclusive, designed to match the previously revealed Soul Stone treatment
- Cosmic foil variant — the chase headliner of Marvel Super Heroes
Indestructible artifact removal-resistance, free mana production, and a repeatable flicker effect once Harnessed? This is going to be an instant Commander staple, especially in white-based blink and ETB-trigger decks. The 6-mana Harness cost is steep but the payoff is permanent value.
To celebrate the reveal, Wizards collaborated with East Continental Gems to create a real-life Infinity Gauntlet prop featuring the Mind Stone gem.
What Else We Know About Marvel
The set features iconic Marvel characters as fully playable Magic cards. While the full lineup is being teased over the next eight weeks, expect:
- The full Infinity Stones cycle (Mind, Soul, Power, Time, Space, Reality)
- Marvel's biggest heroes (Spider-Man, Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk)
- Iconic villains (Thanos, Loki, Ultron, Doctor Doom)
- X-Men, Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy representation
MTG x The Hobbit — Releases August 14, 2026
Following the runaway success of Tales of Middle-earth in 2023, Wizards is returning to Middle-earth with a focused Hobbit set. Prerelease runs August 7-13, 2026, with the full set launching August 14.
Smaug the Magnificent — The Headliner
Smaug is the dragon you've been waiting for. Here's the full card text:
- Mana cost: {2}{R}{R} (4 CMC)
- Type: Legendary Creature — Dragon
- Stats: 4/3
- Flying, haste
- Combat trigger: Whenever Smaug attacks, he deals damage equal to the number of Treasures you control to any target
- Upkeep trigger: At the beginning of your upkeep, create a Treasure token
The treasure synergy is brilliant flavor — Smaug literally hoards gold, and the more gold he hoards, the more devastating his attacks become. Out of the box, expect Smaug to one-shot opponents with 8-12+ damage by turn 6 in Treasure-heavy Commander decks. The "any target" clause means he can also snipe planeswalkers or face-tank opponents directly.
Gleaming Gold Smaug — The Collector Chase
The premium Gleaming Gold Smaug, the Magnificent is a Collector Booster exclusive — a fully gilded variant with special foil treatment that evokes Smaug's lair piled with treasure. Only approximately 500 copies will be printed, making this one of the rarest cards in MTG history. Expect post-release pricing in the $1,000-$5,000 range based on similar low-print-run chase cards.
Other Hobbit Highlights
The Hobbit set features:
- Middle-earth Classic Artist Cards — special-treatment cards using artwork from beloved Tolkien illustrators
- Dwarven Language Cards — Khuzdul-script variants for premium pulls
- Trolls, riddles, and the Lonely Mountain — full thematic coverage of Bilbo's journey
- Returning Tales of Middle-earth synergies — likely Ring-tempts-you mechanic and Halfling tribal payoffs
Expected Products
Based on the precedent set by Tales of Middle-earth, expect:
- Play Booster Box (30 packs) — for Draft and general collecting
- Collector Booster Box (12 packs) — for Gleaming Gold Smaug and premium treatments
- Bundle (9 packs + accessories)
- Commander Decks — possibly a Bilbo-led Halfling deck and a Smaug-led Treasure deck
- Scene Boxes — limited-run themed collector boxes (returned from LOTR)
- Prerelease Kits — at local game stores starting August 7
Why These Sets Matter for Universes Beyond
2026 is shaping up as the biggest year ever for Universes Beyond. With Final Fantasy, TMNT, Avatar, Marvel, and The Hobbit all releasing, Wizards is leaning hard into mainstream IP partnerships. Three reasons this matters:
- Cross-fandom demand — Marvel and Hobbit attract huge non-Magic audiences. Expect demand to outpace supply at launch.
- Sealed product appreciation — Tales of Middle-earth Collector Booster Boxes have appreciated 40-60% since release. Marvel and Hobbit boxes could see similar or greater gains.
- Long-tail relevance — Marvel and Tolkien IP have multi-decade staying power. Cards from these sets will hold value far longer than typical Standard sets.
What to Buy Now (Universes Beyond Already Available)
If you're hyped about Marvel and Hobbit, you can experience Universes Beyond right now with these sets:
- Final Fantasy — All 16 Final Fantasy games as Magic cards. The most successful UB set to date.
- Avatar: The Last Airbender — Aang, Zuko, Katara, and the four nations.
