Best MTG Sets of 2024: Buyer's Guide

Between format-defining sets, blockbuster Universes Beyond crossovers, and one spectacular disaster, there's a lot to sort through. We've updated this for March 2026 with current sealed prices and appreciation data.

The Must-Own Sets
Modern Horizons 3 (June 2024)
The premium set of the era. Serialized Eldrazi, fetch land reprints, and format-defining cards across Modern, Commander, and Legacy. Play Booster boxes at ~$267, Collector boxes at ~$678. MH1 and MH2 both appreciated significantly over time — MH3 should follow the same trajectory.
Top cards: Emrakul, the World Anew (~$125 borderless foil), Ulamog the Defiler (~$85), Nadu Winged Wisdom (banned in Modern, Commander powerhouse), allied fetch lands.
Foundations (November 2024)
The most important set for Standard — cards are legal for 5 years (until 2029). Doubling Season reprint, fracture foil Showcase treatments, and cornerstone reprints at every position. Card Kingdom called it "the best set of the year and it wasn't close."
Top cards: Doubling Season (fracture foil chase), Twinflame Tyrant, Muldrotha, Bloodthirsty Conqueror (infinite combo with Marauding Blight-Priest).
Final Fantasy (June 2025)
The best-selling MTG set of all time. Neon Ink Traveling Chocobo cards reaching $1,000–$7,200. The first Universes Beyond set legal in Standard, proving the model works when the IP has deep lore and a passionate fanbase.
Top cards: Neon Ink variants ($1,000+), Cloud Midgar Mercenary, Sephiroth, Jidoor Aristocratic Capital (~$150 prerelease foil).
Strong Sets Worth Buying
Bloomburrow (August 2024)
Don't let the cute animals fool you — Bloomburrow is a collector powerhouse. Only 20 cards got the borderless raised-foil anime treatment, and they command insane prices: Jace ~$262, Chatterfang ~$217, Ms. Bumbleflower ~$275. Collector boxes at ~$995 are appreciating. Great tribal Commander support and a charming draft format.
Duskmourn: House of Horror (September 2024)
Horror-themed set with Japanese Showcase "fracture foils" of Overlords and the Enduring cycle ($200–$350 each). The Double Exposure textured foil treatments are stunning. Mechanics interact seamlessly — one of the best draft formats of 2024. Collector box at ~$605.
Edge of Eternities (August 2025)
Ancient Tomb reprint (~$120), shock land reprints ($8–$12), and Galaxy Foil land variants tied to eternal-format demand. Rapid price appreciation post-release. Tezzeret Cruel Captain at ~$38.
Avatar: The Last Airbender (November 2025)
The greatest Limited format of 2025 — felt the most like "real Magic" despite being Universes Beyond. Aang Swift Savior variant at $1,144, Wan Shi Tong at ~$82. Strong IP-driven demand.
Tarkir: Dragonstorm (April 2025)
The fan-favorite return to Tarkir. Ugin Eye of the Storms at ~$80 (Ghostfire Halo Foil ~$400), Mox Jasper ~$80, Elspeth Storm Slayer ~$50+. Five strong Commander precons — see our full Commander guide. Collector boxes retraced ~20% to ~$325, potentially a buy-the-dip opportunity.
Budget Picks
Don't have $250+ for a premium box? These deliver strong value at lower prices:
- Aetherdrift Play Booster Box (~$129) — cheapest entry point. Verge lands are Standard staples, Ketramose is a Commander hit, and the Exhaust mechanic is genuinely fun.
- Murders at Karlov Manor (~$150) — Surveil lands see play in virtually every format. Great long-term holds.
- Duskmourn Play Booster Box (~$150) — Excellent draft format, strong singles, fun mechanics.
- Lorwyn Eclipsed Play Box (~$119 on sale) — Currently 28% below MSRP. Shock land reprints, tribal depth, outstanding draft format.
What to Avoid
Spider-Man (September 2025)
Widely considered the worst set of 2025. Weak card designs, interchangeable Spider-people, poor draft experience, no Commander precons. Average mythic only $6.47. Full non-foil set value is just $184.72. Unless you're a die-hard Spider-Man fan, skip it.
Fallout Commander Decks — for Investment
The decks themselves are excellent (The Wise Mothman deck was EDHREC's #1 precon of 2024). But sealed product values crashed hard post-release. Great to play, not great to hold.
Best Commander Precons
| Year | #1 Pick | Set | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 | Mutant Menace (The Wise Mothman) | Fallout | "Synergy off the charts" — counters + proliferate |
| 2024 | Animated Army (Bello) | Bloomburrow | Turns artifacts/enchantments into 4/4 creatures |
| 2025 | Counter Blitz (Tidus) | Final Fantasy | "Undisputed king of 2025" — +1/+1 counter movement |
| 2025 | Eternal Might (Temmet) | Aetherdrift | Best Zombie deck ever made |
| 2025 | Mardu Surge (Zurgo) | Tarkir | Fast aggro, token synergy, incredible reprints |

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best MTG set to buy right now?
For overall value, Modern Horizons 3 has the strongest track record — MH1 and MH2 both appreciated significantly. For Standard play, Foundations is essential (5-year legality). For pure collecting, Final Fantasy and Bloomburrow Collector boxes have the highest ceilings.
Which MTG Collector Booster box has the best value?
It depends on your budget. Duskmourn (~$605) and Edge of Eternities (~$600) offer strong pull rates at accessible prices. Bloomburrow (~$995) and Final Fantasy (~$1,486) have higher ceilings but cost significantly more. Modern Horizons 3 (~$678) is the best balance of cost and upside.
Are Universes Beyond sets worth buying?
When the IP fits — absolutely. Final Fantasy (best-selling set ever) and Avatar: The Last Airbender (best Limited of 2025) are excellent. Spider-Man was a disaster. The lesson: beloved franchises with deep lore translate to MTG far better than superhero properties.
What is the best Commander precon from 2024-2025?
The Wise Mothman (Fallout Mutant Menace) for 2024 — counters and proliferate with unmatched synergy. Counter Blitz (Final Fantasy) for 2025 — +1/+1 counter movement strategy that dominated tables. Both are available under $50.
